Relay for Life has been such a huge part of my life for many years. Having a lot of family and friends affected by cancer makes this organization a huge priority in my life. After four years on the planning committee for the Troy Relay for Life, I was so glad to continue my Relay career here at CMU.
Being on the planning committee for Relay brings me such joy. I was the survivorship chair which is a huge role in the relay world. I was responsible for getting survivors to our event and making sure they felt like the stars of the show. I can’t wait for next years relay!
Where has the time gone? I don’t know why this blog is so hard for me to write. Every time I sit down to write this, I find myself scrolling through old pictures and reminiscing on memories. As the last few days of the year approach, I have caught myself reflecting on one of the most memorable years of my life. Coming to college, was one of the most life changing experiences. Who knew that the guy I drove to the hospital after getting stabbed in the butt would end up being my best friend? Or the girl whose succulent I broke on the first day would be one of my best friends?
I vividly remember move in day like it was yesterday. After I was all moved in, and my parents left, I was now stuck with these three guys I had never met before. After a few awkward conversations, I knew these guys were going to be my best friends. I honestly can’t imagine my first year without these three. From our late night pizza talks to killing every plant we owned (even a cactus) I won’t change a thing.
Now for Barnes. Going into the year I was excited to live with everyone in LAS but I was not excited about living in the oldest dorm. However, Barnes is the place to be! There was never a day where I didn’t love living here. No matter what time of day, I know I can always walk into a room and memories will instantly begin to happen.
What is a leader? Dictionary.com defines a leader as a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. How many people can you think of that fit that description? This doesn’t sound like a leader to me. A leader in my mind is someone who puts others before themselves. Someone who goes out of their way to make someones day better. Someone who encourages others to be the best versions they can be. Now how many people can you think of?
Our world is lacking true, ethical leaders. Zachary Quinn, however, fits my description of a leader. Who is Zachary Quinn you ask? He is the founder of Love Your Melon. When he was a sophomore in college, he decided he wanted to make a change in the world. Zach came up with the idea of donating hats to children with cancer on a buy one, donate one basis. And his idea exploded!
Zach exemplifies the qualities that I see in a leader. He is putting others before himself by donating thousands of hats t0 children with cancer. He put aside his problems of being a broke college student and went out and changed the world. He is spreading awareness by creating a college ambassador program to help students just like himself make a difference in the world! Now he is a true leader!
Who is Fred? What is the Fred Factor?
Fred was a mail man who went out of his way to make people happy and made sure the people around him felt like someone cared about them. Fred touched so many people that it caused a chain reaction which would later be turned into a book called “The Fred Factor”.
In LDR 100, our mission was to go out and be a Fred. My group decided to write letters of appreciation to people in our lives who don’t get the credit they deserve. We then gave a presentation to our class on our project and who is a Fred in our life.
My Fred is my friend Kristie. Kristie is an inspiration to everyone she encounters. She is always there for me when I need her and she always inspires me to be the best
version of myself. I am so thankful to have her in my life!
